Call Meeting to Order The Board of Education of USD #331 met on October 8, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. for a regular meeting at the Board of Education Office. Welcome Guests/Patron Communications President Jon Wollen called the meeting to order. Approval of Agenda The agenda was approved with one change: Item 14 Executive Session was moved to Item 5.5. Consent Agenda · Approval of the minutes of the September 10th regular meeting · Approval of the clerk’s/treasurer’s reports · Approval of the warrants in the amount of $957,156.50 · Approval of the Monthly Budget Report Site Council The board decided to attend the site council meetings once again this year. Allen Young will attend KHS Site Council and KES Site Council. Jon Wollen and Don Ward will attend the Norwich Site Council. Executive Session The board went into executive session. Non-Budgeted Expense Request Superintendent Carter explained that he had received several requests for projects in the district. Discussion was held and all decisions will be made by the strategic planning committee. Teacher Shortage Scott Carter, superintendent, presented information on the teacher shortage in the state of Kansas. KHS Band Calendar No action was taken on this item. Jacqueline Charbonneau, band director, is working on this project. Communicating Success The district did very well on the 2007 Kansas Assessment Results. Kingman Elementary School, Norwich Elementary School, and Norwich High School meet the Standard of Excellence in Reading and Math. Kingman High School met the Standard of Excellence in Math. Superintendent Carter gave credit to the teachers, students, and parents for these successes. KASB Regional Meeting Scott Carter, superintendent, and Jon Wollen, board president, presented information from the KASB Regional Meeting. Graduation Award Requirements Discussion was held on the graduation award requirements for the high schools. The board adopted the following criteria: Students who enroll in concurrent credit offerings, excluding those taught by USD #331 staff during the school day, will be informed that grades from these courses must be received by May 12, 2008, in order for them to be used to calculate honors for Valedictorian and Salutatorian. If grades are not received by this date, the computation will be based upon the in-house course offerings completed. Grades will be computed at the conclusion of the seniors’ last day of regular attendance. Valedictorian and Salutatorian recipients will be notified as soon as grades are officially verified. The board thanked Lanny Hower, Norwich High School Principal, and Rick Henry, Kingman High School Principal, for their work on this item. Administrative Reports Leon Albert, assistant superintendent; Lanny Hower, Max Clark, Brent Garrison, Rick Henry, Deana Waltrip, principals; Bill Kelley, assistant principal; and Dennis Albright, technology coordinator, gave written updates to the board. Superintendent Report Scott Carter, superintendent, reported that we are still working on the problem with the Kingman Elementary School Gym Floor. Mr. Carter told the board that the letters have been sent to the Strategic Planning Committee which will meet Friday, November 2, and Saturday, November 3. Other Actions As Required The board scheduled two special meetings for Friday, November 2, 2007, at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 3, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. Consideration of Resignations (Licensed and/or Classified) No action was taken on this item. Consideration of Contracts (Licensed and/or Classified) The board approved a contract for Jim Howard as weight room coordinator for the winter and spring seasons at Kingman High School. Next Meeting and Adjournment The next regular meeting will be Monday, November 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Board of Education Office. The meeting was adjourned at 8:32 p.m. |
