Things you need ready to file the FAFSA:

  • Student FSA ID and Password

    • Memorize and save this information; it is used year after year

    • Use an email account accessible to you after high school; it cannot be the same email account as your parent’s FSA ID and Password

  • Parent FSA ID and Password

    • Memorize and save this information; it is used year after year

  • Last year's Financial Information for Student and Parent(s) – tax return, bank statements, asset information (does not include a primary residence or 401K or IRA balances)

  • Student Social Security Number

  • Parent(s) Social Security Number

  • IRS Data Retrieval Tool (found in the FAFSA, it will prepopulate some of the FAFSA data from your submitted tax forms)

    • This tool is not available if you:

      • are married, but file separately

      • file an amended return

      • have no Social Security Number

  • Time! (The good news is renewals only take about 10 minutes!)

A Few Common Questions:

  • What if my tax information does not reflect my current circumstances?

    • Complete the FAFSA with your information, and then contact the post-secondary school to see if your situation qualifies for any special considerations (e.g. divorce or death in the family, a major change in income, etc.)

  • Who is my parent?

    • Parents live together: include both on the FAFSA.

    • Parents are divorced or separated: include the parent that you lived with more during the past 12 months

      • If equal, include the parent that provided more financial support in the last 12 months

      • If equal, determine which parent to put on the FAFSA

    • If putting a parent on the FAFSA that has remarried, the stepparent’s financial information must also be included on the FAFSA.
